Visual Language - Conveying a Message

Visual language often has a message or a meaning. Sometimes those message a unclear or hidden.

Things in the background can give us clues about what might be happening.

What can we ask to help us understand the message of an image?
  • Why is she wearing a mask?
  • Why is she carrying a lamb?
  • How come there are no other animals around?
  • What is she looking at?
  • Is she running away from something? What is it?
  • What is just outside the frame? What can’t we see?

What might be outside the frame?
  • There could be a house
  • Maybe there are other animals
  • Maybe there has been a fire - Is the sky full of grey clouds or is it smokey?

What is our eye drawn to first?
  • The girl - She is wearing bright red, she is close to the front and is the biggest thing in the picture, it is unusual to see someone carrying a lamb and wearing a mask.

What message can we take from the photo?

  • Never leave anyone behind.
  • Be selfless.
  • Even when you are protecting others make sure you protect yourself.
