The next section in the book is from Summer’s perspective.
We thought of some words that could describe Summer:
- Kind, full of joy, selfless, friendly, not afraid (of August, to be seen hanging out with August), cheerful, fun, bubbly, creative, caring
We thought that all of these character traits actually suit her name, Summer.
Her name really describes who she is as a person.
“No, I’m friends with him because I want to be friends with him.”
What does this statement tell us about Summer’s attitude?
- She doesn’t care about how he looks, she cares about who he is.
- There are probably people who want to hang out with him but won’t in case others see them together. Summer doesn’t care.
Summer’s first reason for sitting with August was that she felt sorry for him. Now she sits with him because he’s fun. She enjoys being with August.
The Plague - a game that other kids play at school.
If you touch August, you have 30 seconds to wash your hands or find hand sanitiser before you catch the plague.
At the party, is told she should choose between hanging out with August or hanging out with the ‘popular group’ and she leaves the party.
What do we think about her choice to leave the party?
- She feels like she doesn’t want to be around those kind of people.
- Maybe she’s thinking that it’s all a bit much.
This raises the question: Does being popular always mean that you are a good/kind person?
‘You know Summer, you don’t have to be friends with me’ August thought Summer was asked to be friends with him.
They had to have a really open conversation about this
Summer was able to ask August what happened to his face. And the conversation was fine because they were already great friends.
